Safety Matters

Safety Matters

If you live in Chicago you’ve probably heard about this story. There was an attempted abduction of a jogger near the lake. The jogger was running along a bike bath when someone grabbed her from behind. Luckily, the women broke free and was able to get away.

Unfortunately, there are some unavoidable risks in running outside and it’s important to keep these risks at a minimum. Here are a few points to stay safe while running outside:

  • Be aware of your surroundings. If you run with music keep the volume low and always stay alert.
  • Carry identification with your name, number, and blood type. I recommend getting a Road ID.

  • Tell someone where you’re going to run and how long you anticipate you’ll be gone.
  • Choose a well-lit route.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing at dawn, dusk, or nighttime.

  • Run with a friend or running group.

My Favorite Running Partner

  • If you are confronted, run toward a populated area and do not panic.
  • Carry a cell phone so if confronted you’ll be able to contact police immediately.
  • If running on the road, always run against traffic.

Please stay safe and enjoy your run! 🙂

Don’t forget to enter my raffle to win Cubs tickets. I’m proud to be running with DetermiNation and I’m shooting to raise $1,000. Please consider supporting me with a donation. My Fundraising Page.

About Sara

  1. I just read about that this morning. Even scarier it was at 2pm during the day!

I usually run in that area and this gives me the willies. I never run with music for this reason. And when it’s not 90 out, I always bring my favorite running partner with me, my border collie cb.

I am somewhat pissed they waited almost a week to publish this story. Something like this needs to be out in the media much faster.

    I love your dog!!!

  2. Ugh, that story makes me sick to my stomach! I am not nearly as safe as I need to be on runs. Especially living alone, I never let anyone know when I go running. I need to get a road ID ASAP! Maybe I’ll just stick to the treadmill until I get that done. :/

Yeah not cool – I have the running vest and a nike arm band that flashes at night… was nearly hit by a car while training.

    Stay safe!

  4. That is so scary! I usually run alone during the day, but if I’m ever running at night I make certain to have a buddy!

  5. Yikes! That’s frightening!! I like to run on a trail by a lake…it’s usually populated, but you never know! I’m the worst at having my music up too high…but will be more aware of it now. I’m out in semi-rural NC, but it can happen anywhere! Those ID bracelets are awesome…I will get out my label maker, get crafty and whip up something like that for myself. Good tips! 🙂

    • haha, I would laugh at you if you made one with a label maker. 😉

      • Carlos L says:

Very funny – I say write a note and pin it to your shirt like kindergarden 😛

On a serious note – Any concern over the flash mob attacks along the lakefront?

I want to run the lakefront but I certainly dont want to get jacked by a mob of 8+
