Day In The Life Of…

Day In The Life Of…

I’m still here and alive! Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, I’ve been super busy with the new job. I love what I’m doing and pretty much have the best boss in the world. I’m working long days (9-10 hours) with a 3 hour commute so I don’t have much time to blog. I’m not going to stop blogging, but I’m not going to put pressure on myself. If I have the time and feel inspired than I will blog, but I don’t want to force it.

One question I’ve been getting a lot lately is how I squeeze marathon training into my busy schedule. Well… it hasn’t been easy. The first week was rather stressful, but I’m getting the hang of it. My days are crazy and crammed packed, so I rely on my morning routine to keep me sane. I know early morning workouts aren’t for everyone, but I have the most energy in the morning and I would much rather come home and decompress after work than go for a run.

I find it interesting to hear about other people’s schedules and to see how they fit everything in so I thought I’d give you a glimpse of a day in the life of a working gal with a long commute who’s training for a marathon.

4:00 – Alarm goes off, get out of bed, check email, check training plan, drink water, eat packet of instant oatmeal

4:40 – Head out the door to run (Monday & Wednesday’s are usually speed work, Tuesday & Thursday’s are usually easy runs)

6:00 – Walk and feed Max

6:15 – Shower, get dressed, blow-dry hair, put on make-up

6:55 – Toast bagel, grab lunch

7:05 – Drive to the train

7:45 – Arrive at train, pay for parking

8:00 – Get on the train, post workout on dailymile, tweet, text,

8:43 – Arrive at work, eat bagel, work, eat snack, work, eat lunch, work, eat snack, and work some more…I drink so much water that I go to the bathroom almost every 30 minutes. My co-workers probably think there is something wrong with me

6:00 – Get on the train, check email, tweet, text…. thankful I ran in the morning so I don’t have to run once I get home

6:50 – Get off the train, make the painful long walk to my car. My feet are usually killing me from running & wearing heels to work

7:30 – Arrive home, woohoo!

7:45 – Pack lunch, make dinner

8:00 – Eat dinner, tweet, read blogs, organize my thoughts, lay out my running clothes for the next day

8:30 – Foam roll while watching TV, get excited for my run in the morning

9:30 – Get ready for bed, pack everything I’ll need for the next day

10:30 – In bed.

What time do you wake up in the morning? How do you squeeze everything in?

  1. Wow, girl, that is a grueling schedule! But I have to say, it doesn’t look much different from mine these days. I’m kind of feeling the same way about blogging. I am so busy that I just need some time to relax at the end of the day! Glad you’re doing well! 🙂

  2. You are a machine! Kudos for the early morning runs- I struggle too much running in the morning to ever convince myself they are worth it. It is really tough to balance work, life, and marathon training without going crazy or neglecting important people in your life. You seem to have a really good schedule to make everything work 🙂

You are doing great Sara! I am following your runs, too!

  4. Oy! That’s quite a long day! I’m usually out of bed by 6am and home by 6pm, so I usually run in the evening. On the days when I need to run and I know I can’t do it after work, I’m usually out of bed by 5:20am.

I try to fit everything in by limiting what I do. If I don’t check myself, my evenings fill up with weekly activities – volunteering, dance classes, Pilates, community band practice. I’ve realized I can’t do everything. I try to focus on one or two things that I really enjoy, and devote myself to those. Maybe someday if I can sustain myself on freelance work, I can create a schedule that allows for more hobbies/activities. But with a rigid work schedule and 1.5 hours of commuting every day, it’s limiting. But this isn’t exactly a bad problem to have! Some people have time for zero hobbies, at least I have time for a couple.

  5. Glad to see you trying to keep up the blog. I just posted again at http://www.jimpattillo.com I need to do it more frequently.

I barely have energy to foam roll at night let alone run. I’m up at 4:30, then drive to meet my group with my work clothes in my car. Run from 5:30 to 6:30 ish… Shower at the gym and get to my desk by 7:30. My days are better when I’m in court or on the road. I seem to have more energy. But I’m needing over 8 hours sleep lately so I try to get in bed by 10:00.
