Good News!!

Good News!!

I don’t need surgery!!!

I don’t have a tear in my Achilles tendon!!!

I will be able to train, raise money for American Cancer Society (check out my donation page), and…..

RUN THE CHICAGO MARATHON!!!

I am all smiles and couldn’t be happier.

I was shaking while waiting for Dr. Daniels to tell me the MRI results. I had prepared myself for the worst and was getting ready for him to tell me I couldn’t run. Thank goodness he told me the opposite. Dr. Daniels came in with a huge smile on his face and told me I would be able to run the marathon. The reason I’ve been having pain and swelling is because when I first injured my Achilles a nodule (small sack of fluid) formed along my tendon. Since I’ve been wearing the boot the nodule and swelling has gone done significantly.

I still have a lot of hard work and recovery to do but I’m totally ready for it and will do what ever my doctor and PT tell me to. So the plan is to continue to wear the boot for the next week or two and each day I can wear the boot a little less. I start physical therapy in two weeks and that’s when I will learn how to stretch and strengthen my Achilles. I will be using an ultrasound for a deep friction massage to increase circulation and reduce scar tissue. In three weeks I can slowly start running again!!! And then I’ll have a gait analysis done to help me run more efficiently and to identify posture or movement related problems.

The news was music to my ears. Running is my most treasured passion and I’m not going to lie…it’s been a rough couple of days. Running boost my confidence and self-esteem and not being about to has left me feeling kind of empty. I am extremely lucky my injury is only minor but what if I did tear my Achilles and couldn’t run for six months? Would it be the end of the world? NO! I need to learn other coping skills to be able to deal with the ups and downs of life. I want to love myself if I’m running or not. Running is a huge part of my life but it shouldn’t be everything.

One thing I know for sure…I will never take running for granted again. I will appreciate every mile and know thatΒ  lacing up my shoes and hitting the open road is a gift.

  1. Awesome News!!!!! So happy for you. I totally agree running is a gift but not the only option to help w/ streess etc. As I type that I’m thinking to myself be real Abe you would freak if you couldn’t run :).

Having done rehab I know how frustrating things could get. Please let me know if I can help w/ your recovery/training or just a fun run.

Keep smiling and I’ll see ya on the roads. πŸ™‚

    • haha, thanks for being honest Abe. I’ve definitely been freaking out but feel very relieved now. I’ll keep you updated on my recovery. πŸ™‚

  2. That’s great news! And what a gift πŸ™‚

  3. Great news! So happy to hear it. Just recover smart, listen to your doctor, and you’ll have a great summer of running.

    • Listening to my doctor might be the hard part but I’m going to do it! I don’t want to push myself and jeopardize Chicago! Do you have any other races planned for the summer? Are you running the Rockn’Roll 1/2?

We’re super thrilled for you! (Also glad to hear that you did not run a half marathon on a torn achilles! hehe). Take care of your body, missy, it’s the only one you got (I know, we should all take this advice).

    Muah!

    • Thank you for dealing with my emotional roller coaster this weekend. I couldn’t have asked for a better therapist. You are truly the best sister! Love you.

  5. Sara!!! This is the BEST news! I am so thrilled for you! I can only imagine how hard it’s been for you to go without running, and I can totally relate to what a loss it would be to never be able to run again (this is coming from the girl who ran with a couple of broken toes for several weeks last summer!). I admire you for the determination and desire to love yourself with or without running. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without it! It is my therapy for sure and it helps balance me out when my emotions are otherwise all over the place. I look forward to seeing what other coping strategies you come up with! Even yesterday, when I was a mess after the accident, all I wanted to do was RUN!! I am so grateful that I was able to! πŸ™‚

    • Thanks Melissa! I’m the exact same way…whenever I’m stressed or dealing with something difficult all I want to do is RUN! I’m sorry to hear about your accident. How are you doing? You and I have a lot of reasons to be running our little hearts out….it’s the best coping strategy/therapy I’ve found.

  6. That is good news, and I’m glad to hear you are running to raise money for the American Cancer Society. I’m running to raise money for LLS (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society). Good luck in training, and I look forward to reading your blog in the future!

  7. That is wonderful news! Good luck with the rest of your recovery!

  8. CONGRATS!!! this really is great news! I am so excited for you πŸ™‚ I can understand the being SO nervous waiting for the doctor to come in…I had to go through that a few times in March and it was terrifying! I am glad it was good news πŸ™‚

  9. SO EXCITING! Congrats on the wonderful news! It’s so great to meet you!

  10. Great news about your Achilles! I just found your blog through Wearing Mascara and I’m glad I did–I’m also running the Chicago marathon in October. Looking forward to reading more of your posts!

    • Thanks Colleen! That’s awesome you’re running Chicago…I ran it last year and loved it. The city is beautiful and the energy helps push you through the 26.2 miles. =)

  11. That is great news!!! Last year, in April, I jacked up my knee and waiting for the MRI was the worst! I did have a tear in my meniscus, but it wasn’t large enough to need surgery and with PT I was able to train for the Chicago Marathon! Yay! Stick to the PT and listen to your body… the hardest part was not being able to train 100% and having to cut runs short when I was in pain, but it paid off! Good luck πŸ™‚

    • Thank you Liz! Your story makes me feel a lot better. How’s your knee doing? Are you running Chicago this year?

BTW… I LOVE when you have pics of Chicago in your posts. I can’t wait to live in the city. Maybe we can run along the lake sometime? πŸ™‚

      • The knee will randomly bother me…like on a long car ride or flight, but for the most part he’s holding up really well. The doctor told me i was one of the weakest people he’s ever seen (whatever!), so I’ve been trying to focus on hip and core strength to help the continuous healing process. I am not running Chicago this year because I’m afraid (wimp) it is not fully healed. I hope to run NYC next year! It will be my 3rd year in the lottery, so I’m hoping year 3 is the lucky year!

Summer is the best time to live in the city – hopefully your job search goes quickly! Let me know when you’re here and I’ll try and keep up with you on a run πŸ™‚

  12. Thanks Liz! I’d love to meet up for a run sometime. Are you planning on doing any other races this summer?

  13. I’ve just come across your blog and began to read and I was keeping my fingers crossed that you would still be able to run! Congratulations, that’s really great news. Good luck with the rest of your recovery.
