Oprah’s final show is hard to put into words. My Mom and I watched the show last night and we cried and laughed together just like we have done the past 25 years. My Mom started watching Oprah in 1984 when she was pregnant with me & my sister. My Mom is one of Oprah’s biggest fans and I have a lot of fond memories growing up with her voice in the back ground. I have seen Oprah change my Mom’s life….she smoked cigarettes for over thirty years and she finally decided to quit because of Oprah and Dr. Oz.
I have enormous respect for what Oprah has accomplished. She has made a difference in the world and set a good example for all of us. Here are few things that stood out to me in Oprah’s Farewell Speech:
In every way, in every day, you are showing people exactly who you are. You’re letting your life speak for you.
Nobody but you is responsible for your life. It doesn’t matter what your mama did; it doesn’t matter what your daddy didn’t do. You are responsible for your life. … You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself, and you’re responsible for the energy that you bring to others. There is a difference, you know, between thinking you deserve to be happy and knowing you are worthy of happiness.
So what I know is, God is love and God is life, and your life is always speaking to you. First in whispers. … It’s subtle, those whispers. And if you don’t pay attention to the whispers, it gets louder and louder.
Oprah makes me want to be a better person. I want to be a positive light in this world and bring positive energy into other’s lives. I feel like Oprah was speaking directly to me and I’m not going to ignore the message.
What do you think about Oprah’s message?

Love it. It’s so true about being responsible for yourself. Working with the mentally ill, my philosophy has developed to the point where I have to be comfortable with mental illness being both a disease (often outside of our control to a large extent) while also knowing my patients are capable of change. This is true for all of us. Life can be hard, and much is out of our control, but we all need to focus on growing and developing as human beings. Let us all say the serenity prayer

You’re so right! We do have control over our lives and we create our future with every decision we make. I just wish change wasn’t so hard for me. I seem to get stuck in patterns and can’t get out of them. I’m definitely a work in progress.
