I’ve Been Booted…

I had my appointment with a orthopedist this afternoon and as you can see things didn’t  go very well. I’m a bit emotional about the whole thing and I started crying before the doctor came into the exam room. I’ve known for a while that there’s something wrong but I didn’t want to deal with it. Nothing showed up in the x-ray so tomorrow I’m getting an MRI. My doc thinks it’s a partial tear in my Achilles tendon and told me to wear the boot and try to stay off of it as much as possible. :'(

My reaction: Ummm, you mean I can’t run BUT now I have to wear this ugly stinking boot around too?! You have got to be kidding me?

I had a little breakdown and woe is me in the car while talking to my Mom, but a few hours later I calmed down and was able to think about the positive.

Here’s what I came up with:

  • Dr. Daniels said if we figure out what’s wrong now, let it heal, and do physical therapy then he see’s no reason why I can’t train and run the Chicago Marathon in October <——Seriously the best news ever!
  • He told me they have a running program at his office where they do a gait analysis to help athletes run more efficiently and to identify posture-related or movement-related problems in people with injuries.
  • He said I’m going to learn a lot about my body and by the end of this I’ll be stronger than ever. =)

From now until my Achilles is healed I’m going to be following the R.I.C.E. Principle:

With all acute foot injuries, especially Achilles tendon inflammation, follow the RICE principle to reduce swelling, pain and inflammation.

Rest- Try to walk as little as possible, even if you’ve been fitted with a walking boot. If possible walk with crutches to reduce or eliminate weight-bearing.

Ice– Use an ice pack for 20 minutes every two to three hours.

Compression– Use an ace wrap on the ankle. Start at the bottom of the toes and wrap up to the knee.

Elevation– Keep the injured ankle above the level of your heart when sitting or lying down.

    OMG…I want your boot! First let me say, I hear you and how upset you must be!! I just found out yesterday that I have a stress fracture of the right tibia and may have one developing on the left. NO running for me for 8-12 weeks… I was like, “Whatchu talkin’ bout, Willis?” to the doctor!!! I thought it was shin splints at first, kept trying to run on it, and yeah, after way too much pain and trying to suck it up, I went to the doc and got the news I had been dreading. Even worse, I was supposed to take my physical test for entry into the police academy next week. 🙁 NOPE. Not now… I have to go back to the doc in a few days and get my boot, for now I just have crutches…But like you, I decided I will be the best little weight lifter ever and also train my abs. So thank you for this blog entry…I’m feeling better already! Good luck and a speedy recovery!!!

  3. Oh yes the boot. Though your boot looks hardcore. I had it half way through my training for Chicago last year for my achilles,with bursitis along the muscle wall, and PF. I was not a happy camper. My DR even put me in a hard cast so I could stay off it in hopes of healing faster but with two little kids that was impossible. I had minimal training but still did Chicago with a horrible record time thanks in part to the heat and a new injury at the halfway point but still I finished. Thing is this early in the season you can start to do alternative activities to help heal but still train. Pool running (wish I had access to a pool last year!) should be good as well as the bike. Hopefully it’s just a minor strain. Good luck!

  4. Michel, thanks for your well wishes. I’m sorry to hear you were injured last year. How’s your Achilles doing now?

    • Well during the marathon some muscles in my foot over compensated for the bad PF and put some stress on the achilles. I spent 2 months in PT after that for the PF. They also helped me with my achilles. The achilles has healed because the PF has gotten better than what it was. The one thing I stay away from is hills because that’s pretty much how I overdid it and injured it last year. I’ve done a lot of exercises to strengthen my ankle and it seems to have helped with both issues. Hope that helps!

  5. Hi! I saw you tweet today about your injury and I had to stop by because I went through the same thing very recently, and I know how comforting it is to have people stop by & give you kind words of advice and encouragement!
    So this: “He said I’m going to learn a lot about my body and by the end of this I’ll be stronger than ever” is 100% true! Keep that in mind no matter how long it takes to get through it!

      How’s your Achilles doing now? You didn’t need surgery?

      • Mine was runner’s knee. it’s mostly cooperating.. No surgery. I’m not back to long distance yet, but I am very happy to be running again.

    Injuries stink “in the moment,” but if you approach them with a plan (you are a planner, right?) and determination (there’s that word again!), then you will come out the other side a much better, stronger athlete. I lost the entire year of 2005 with a torn ACL. At times during rehab, I cried (yeah, a 40-some-year-old guy crying. Not a pretty picture.) because 1) rehab sometimes hurt like Hell, and 2) I thought it would never be over. I just wanted to RUN!

    But I put in the effort. I tried to work harder than anybody else in the rehab facility. I was determined to get healed and get stronger. You know what? It worked. I became a much stronger and faster runner after that injury. I’m also much smarter now about listening to my body and paying attention to little things so they don’t become bigger problems.

    I have a huge amount of confidence in you. Keep your chin up. Work hard. Reach out to your friends on Twitter, Facebook, your blog and even – GASP! – in real life when you need a shoulder to cry on. We’ll support you.

      Your comment means so much to me, thank you! I’m sorry to hear you were injured & had to take the year off. I’m very thankful to have people in my life (mostly online) who understand what I’m going through.

      Your story inspires me b/c I plan (yes, I’m a planner) on doing the same thing. I’m going to do whatever my doctor tells me even if that means I can’t run for months. Running is my passion & if I want to do it for the rest of my life, I need to take care of my body. I’m hoping/praying you’re right & this injury will make me a stronger runner.

      I’m volunteering for ACS at the Solder Field 10 Mile race. I think I saw your name on the list so I hope we’ll get a chance to talk in person! 🙂
