Training With A Jogging Stroller

Training With A Jogging Stroller

Training for Winter Warriors has begun. Yes, this coach needs to get back into shape so I can run, coach and get my trainees ready for their winter half marathon. I want to be in good shape so I can support them and not worry about keeping up.

All of my runs since having Allison have been with the BOB. I wasn’t going to buy a jogging stroller until spring because I didn’t know how much running I would get in before winter, but my step mom surprised me with it and I’m really thankful I’ve had it.

Allison wants to be with her mommy 24/7 so using the jogging stroller is really my only option if I want to run. Eventually I’ll start taking her to the daycare at our gym, but not until she’s 3 months old.

I didn’t run for 6 weeks after having her so I’ve been slowly easing back into it. I’ve done 4 runs the past week and a half – running around 3 miles each time.

BOB

My first run back was exciting and challenging. Of course, I felt emotional and shed a few happy tears because I’m so incredibly thankful to be able to run with my daughter. Over a year ago, I had to give up running when I was going through IVF and here I am, a year later running with my miracle baby. Giving up my passion for awhile wasn’t easy, but it was so worth it.

Running with a jogging stroller sounds easy, right? Just push your child in the stroller and away you go! But it takes a little more effort and a little more thought than I thought. Here are my tips on how to train with a jogging stroller:

  • Do some research and find a stroller that will fit your needs.
  • If you are breastfeeding, go right after you feed your little one. You’ll physically be more comfortable and your baby will hopefully sleep longer.
  • Plan your runs around nap time.
  • Make sure you dress your baby appropriately. Your little one isn’t out there working up a sweat and with a breeze you’ll probably want a couple of layers you can add or remove.
  • Watch your form. Keep your shoulders down and back.
  • Bring a toy and a snack to keep your little one distracted and happy.

It feels great to get out there and start training again!

  1. Don’t you just love the BOB? It’s my favorite baby gear thing! I never got the car seat adaptor. It’s interesting that the Chicco one faces outward. I thought they all faced in.

I have gotten a LOT of questions about running with Claire since I also started running with her at 6 weeks. I didn’t see the point in waiting until she was older (as the BOB stroller says to wait until 6-8 months? um no.). I had a big head support thing for her head and wrapped her up real good so she wasn’t moving around at all. Lots of people expressed their “concerns” for me running so early with her (but there is no evidence that it’s bad for babies). Just be prepared for some weird comments from people who may not have the same views. I think what you’re doing is great though!

  2. YES, the BOB is my favorite baby item too!! Our car seat adaptor can face both directions. It’s funny you mention the comments about running with an infant. I’ve been getting them too! Allie is in her car seat so her head doesn’t bounce just like it doesn’t bounce while we’re in the car. As long as their head is protected our pediatrician said it’s fine & she loves it.

  3. I hope I will get to borrow BOB someday 😀

  4. We have a BOB too only I rarely ran with my first and I haven’t done it with Ben. Running tends to be my ME time and my time away from kids– when I get out on the weekends it is my break!

  5. Glad you’re able to be out doing what you love again, and this time with your love! 🙂 Enjoy the beautiful fall weather! Also, I’m surprised people think it would be bad for the baby. I’m assuming you’re not running her through pot holes haha so wouldn’t it be soothing like a car ride?

  6. It must feel so good to be running again! I can’t wait. Pushing the stroller is such hard work. But it’s good training. When you get to run on your own it’s like flying!

  7. I’m glad that I got to read about your experience! As Melissa mentioned above, there is all kind of mixed information on whether it is okay or not to run with a little one. I have been contemplating running with Axel, but didn’t know if it was safe or not. I didn’t want to do something that I wasn’t supposed to be doing (or that would harm him). It’s good to know that your experience has been positive. I feel like if you are running on smooth pavement (not on rocky trails) it should be fine! Hopefully I can give it a go one of these days.

    • I also suggest talking to your pediatrician. We run on a very smooth path and she’s in the car seat. Since you’ve been walking a lot with the jogger I bet Axel will love going for a run.

  8. Allie looks like she really enjoys the stroller!! I love having a jogging stroller and my son now at 3.5 yo still enjoys going for runs with me! our favorite are our “Jammie Runs” -post bath in PJs snuggled in the stroller pointing out stars while I run. Enjoy these runs! I have very fond memories of them with my son.
