Elvis is Alive 5K – Volunteer

Yesterday I had the opportunity to volunteer at Fleet Feet Chicago’s Elvis is Alive 5K race in Lincoln Park. Usually when I volunteer for races I have been stationed at packet pickup or handing out water to runners along the course, but for this race I was helping with runner refresh prep. Runner refresh for this race meant I was on sandwich making duty.

When I first arrived, the volunteer coordinator told us to set up the water and Gatorade bins for the runners. That didn’t take long so we were directed to the sandwich making station.

Sandwich

Fun Fact: Elvis Presley’s favorite food was peanut butter and banana sandwiches so that’s what we made to hand out to the runners. I thought it was hilarious and a fun twist on post-race food.

The evening wouldn’t be complete without peanut butter sandwiches, a complimentary beer from Good Island and the Elvis tribute performance under the lights following the run.

Autumn, Erica and I had a great time chatting and getting peanut butter all over ourselves. We really enjoyed the runners dressed up in polyester and Elvis costumes. There were all kinds of funny t-shirts, wigs, and runners wearing glasses with sideburns attached. Elvis was definitely alive and well in Lincoln Park last night!

I’m looking forward to volunteering at a few more races in the coming months. It’s nice to give back and support the running community.

Do you volunteer at races?
