Run/Walk Intervals

Run/Walk Intervals

Sara Runs again!!! You have no idea how happy I am to type that. It’s been a long six months without running. I’m starting slow and listening to my Doctor.

Run/Walk Intervals

I started with a few minutes of dynamic stretches and jumped on the treadmill to start my intervals. I took it easy and did 3 minutes of running at 6.0MPH and then 2 minutes of walking at 3.8MPH and repeated the intervals until I completed 30 minutes.

It felt amazing to move and sweat a little. I’m extremely nervous since I’m still in the first trimester so I’m going to take it really easy. I plan on doing this same workout 3x’s a week for a couple of weeks and then I’ll start increasing the run interval to 4 minutes of running.

After I finished the intervals I did some light stretching and a few hip exercises. Injuries can come on quick when you have taken a lot of time off from running so I’m going to be extra cautious and coach myself like I would any of my athletes.

Have you ever had to take a long break from running? How did you jump back in to it?

  1. So happy to hear you are back to running! Yes, take it very easy for now. Better to under-do it than to do too much too soon and risk an injury. I have taken off long periods from running (usually from an injury). I do the run/walk thing for at least a week or two to get back into it! Also I try and do some strength training to get my legs up to speed. 🙂

    • Thanks, Pete! I would much rather under-do it, but keep running through my pregnancy. Good idea to start strength training again! I need to get on it.

  2. I took a break last fall while I was working with my PT. Technically I’m back to running, but I’m still feeling tenderness in my knee, so I’m not running very much. Luckily I am enjoying the other ways I’ve been working out, but I do wish I could run the mileage I used to do. I’m sure I’ll miss it even more in the spring.

    • It seems like your knee pain won’t ever go away. 🙁 I know it’s expensive, but have you thought about seeing a different doctor or PT?

  3. Glad to hear you are back to running! I took off during the summer and fall. 🙂 No reason, just that I hated to run.
